Pop culture and entertainment aside, Joliet has a rich history. Once called the “city of stone,” due to the limestone quarries, the residents of Joliet are as wonderful as a mine of gemstones. Originally the city was called “Juliet” but residents took a vote to make the change in 1845. Early settlers ranged from explorers to a large population of Slovenian folk. The Slovenian Women’s Heritage Museum is dedicated to preserving the history of those early settlers and providing education about their culture.
