Let's Talk About Alabama

Alabama is the home of Southern hospitality and musicians, and is known as the cradle of the Civil Rights Movement. Also known as the ‘The Heart of Dixie, Alabama is an eclectic place, built on old-school values. Alabamans are known for their sumptuous southern home cooking that is usually fried or smothered in butter or gravy. Some signature dishes include: fried chicken, grits, biscuits and gravy and sweet tea.

In addition to its traditional values, hospitality and great food, Alabama has deep musical roots. Lionel Richie, Percy Sledge and Nat King Cole all hail from the Cotton State. While Muscle Shoals Sound Studio was responsible for recording Aretha Franklin’s ‘Respect’ and had a swag of the most famous voices in the world through their doors including: The Rolling Stones, Joe Cocker, Rod Stewart, Bob Dylan and Sir Elton John. Huntsville, or Rocket CIty, even has an Annual festival with music called Rocket City Brewfest. Alabama is referred to as the cradle of the Civil Rights Movement. It began with Rosa Parks’ decision to take a seat on publicly segregated bus, which started the Montgomery Bus Boycott. The bombings in the capital of Birmingham and the jailing of Martin Luther King, Jr. catapulted him into the spotlight of the leader of the movement, and was the beginning of the end of segregation. The famous March from Selma to Montgomery was pivotal in leading the Federal Government to ratify the 1965 Civil Rights Act. And of course, Tuscaloosa is home to the beloved Alabama Crimson Tide football team.

Food, music, and civil discourse aside, Alabama is also home to some of the best hospitals in the country. The University of Alabama Hospital in Birmingham, is one of the highest performing hospitals nationally in the treatment of cancer and orthopedic disorders. Where there are healthcare facilities and hospitals, there’s biohazardous and medical waste.

We make regulatory compliance easy.

Alabama’s medical and biohazardous waste is regulated by the Alabama Department of Environmental Management Land Division. Under state-specific regulations, generators who produce more than 220 lbs. of medical waste per month must not store that waste for more than 7 calendar days from the date storage began. The only exception to this is if the waste is stored below 45 degrees Fahrenheit. Want to learn more about Alabama's medical waste guidelines? Click below for a deep-dive.

Waste Classification

Medical waste is defined as a solid waste or combination of solid wastes which because of its infectious characteristics may either cause, or significantly contribute to, an increase in mortality or an increase in serious irreversible or incapacitating reversible illness, or pose a substantial present hazard or potential hazard to human health or the environment when improperly treated, stored, transported, disposed, or otherwise managed.

Storage Requirements

Alabama state requirements mandate:

The containment of medical waste is defined as being housed at the generating facility or some alternative place for a temporary or extended period of time at the end of which the waste is treated or stored elsewhere. Placing waste in a container at the point of generation such as a patient’s room, operating room, or laboratory would not be considered as storage.
