Nevada Infectious Waste Disposal Regulations

Where there are medically focused universities and research facilities there is also biohazardous and medical waste. The management and disposal of medical waste in Nevada is managed by the NDEP (Nevada Division of Environmental Protection) and they are also one of the states operating under OSHA. While Nevada does not require the treatment of medical waste, all medical waste generators are required to use medical waste transporters who hold a permit from the Health Authority to transport medical waste for treatment and disposal. In addition to this:

  • All sharps must be stored in biohazardous waste containers for a maximum of 30 days
  • All biohazardous waste must be placed in red bags clearly displaying the universal biohazard symbol
  • Biohazardous waste may be stored up to 7 days at a temperature not exceeding 32ᴼF
  • Biohazardous waste stored for up to 30 days must be stored below 32ᴼ

Let's Talk about Nevada

When you think of Nevada, desert, the glimmering lights of Sin City, Burning Man, Area 51 and ghost towns all come to mind, however there is much more to the “Silver State” than meets the eye. While Nevada is synonymous with the casinos, bars, nightclubs and celebrity residencies of Las Vegas and Reno, it is actually home to some of mother nature’s most wondrous accomplishments and holiday hotspots.

The Valley of Fire State Park in Overton is the state’s oldest and largest park, its trails weaving through ancient trees and 3,000-year-old Indian petroglyphs. Mount Charleston and the Spring Mountains offer respite from the desert heat, where you can marvel at Big Falls and Cathedral Rock. The Ruby Mountains in Elko County is where you can heli-ski in the desert or visit Lamoille Canyon, a hikers paradise also known as Nevada’s Grand Canyon or get lost in Baker’s Great Basin National Park and visit Wheeler Peak where alpine forest meets high desert. A trip to Hoover Dam in Clark County and Lake Tahoe west of Carson City should be on your hit list along with Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. One of Nevada’s more unique attractions is the lesser-known Fly Geyser, in the Black Rock Desert, covered with red and green algae that gives it its alien appearance.

If you’re a fan of the open road, put the top down and cruise Route 50, also known as the “Loneliest Road” in America, where there is nothing but open fields and the big blue or hit Highway 375, better know as “The Extraterrestrial Highway” and grab a bite at the infamous Little A’Le’Inn hotel. Finish off your Nevadan adventures with a soak in the Spencer Hot Springs, nestled in the Big Smoky Valley. While blessed with natural beauty, Nevada is also home to over 30 colleges and research facilities such as the University of Nevada Las Vegas and the Nevada Center for Biomedical Research, conducting studies on cutting edge stem cell use as well as brain and autoimmune diseases.
