Crisfield hosts the annual Labor Day ‘National Hard Crab Derby’ and is considered the ‘Seafood Capital of the World’, while Smith Island is home to the state’s official dessert the ‘Smith Island Cake’ featuring thin layers of cake held together by gooey chocolate fudge. A number of famous faces were born in the ‘Old Line State’ including, actors Ed Norton, Jada Pinkett-Smith, Anna Faris and The Hoff. The band R.E.M. even have a song titled "Rockville" after the Maryland city the lead singer didn't want his girlfriend at the time to return to. While Baltimore was the birthplace of the most decorated Olympic Champion in history; Michael Phelps, baseball legend Babe Ruth and author Tom Clancy. Maryland was also home to some medical firsts. The National Museum of Civil War Medicine in Frederick details how the war lead to many medical innovations that we still benefit from today. In 1828 the St. Francis Academy was the first dental school in the world. While the first female professor of medicine, Dr. Florence Rina Sabin, graduated from the John Hopkins School of Medicine in 1901.

Maryland Medical Waste Regulations Put Simply
Today, Maryland has over 80 hospitals as well, as aged care facilities and dental clinics all generating medial and or biohazardous waste. Daniels Health has been guiding Maryland’s healthcare facilities for decades to ensure compliance when it comes to the handling and disposal of their medical waste.
The DHMH (Department of Health and Mental Hygiene) is responsible for the definition of regulated medical waste in Maryland. In addition to these regulations the MDE (Department of the Environment) sets the regulations that govern of all aspects of the transport and disposal of special medical waste as well as keeping records of medical waste activity. Waste generators are required to file a notification if they generate 50 lbs. or more of special medical waste in a calendar month or are holding more than 50 lbs. of special biohazard waste on site at any time.
