Maryland Medical Waste Regulations Put Simply

Today, Maryland has over 80 hospitals as well, as aged care facilities and dental clinics all generating medial and or biohazardous waste. The DHMH (Department of Health and Mental Hygiene) is responsible for the definition of regulated medical waste in Maryland. In addition to these regulations the MDE (Department of the Environment) sets the regulations that govern of all aspects of the transport and disposal of special medical waste as well as keeping records of medical waste activity. Waste generators are required to file a notification if they generate 50 lbs. or more of special medical waste in a calendar month or are holding more than 50 lbs. of special biohazard waste on site at any time.
