The “Hawkeye State” has a number of famous connections; Winterset was the birthplace of John Wayne aka The Duke, while Cedar Rapids is Ashton Kutcher’s hometown. Riverside has cult status as the future birthplace of James Tiberius Kirk and hosts the annual “Trekfest.” While Dubuque provided the backdrop to Oscar favorite “Felid of Dreams” and Madison County was where most of “The Bridges of Madison County” was filmed. Clear Lake is where “the music died,” in 1959, when the plane of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper’s crashed into a field. In 1982 in Des Monies a 17-year-old boy threw a bat on stage at a concert, which would spark the infamous Ozzy Osborne incident. When Ozzy realized it was real, he was raced to hospital for a rabies shot after the show.
