Summary: 

What was the study? 

The 12 month Before-After intervention study determined the effect of the Sharpsmart reusable sharps container system on greenhouse gas emissions and needlestick injuries at the 500 bed Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust Hospital.

 

What were the results?

The Sharpsmart sharps container system:

  • Significantly reduced greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 109.80 tons CO2eq per annum which equated to a 91% reduction in GHG from the facility's previous disposable sharps container system.
  • Reduced landfilled waste by 13 tons of plastic and 1.3 tons of cardboard annually
  • Eliminated container-associated Sharps Injuries
  • Reduced sharps container and disposal costs
  • Ensured compliance with HTM 07-10 Safe Management of Healthcare Waste
