How is hospital medical waste regulated in California?
The act further dictates that:
- If a small quantity generator generates more than 20 lbs. of biohazardous waste in a month, this waste (including sharps) must be stored above 32 degrees Fahrenheit at any onsite location for more than 7 days (unless written approval is provided by the department)
- If a small quantity generator generates less than 20 lbs. of biohazardous waste per month, it cannot be stored onsite above 32 degrees Fahrenheit for more than 30 days
In addition to these stringent regulations, generators are required to maintain a comprehensive tracking document for all waste that has been removed, treated, transported or disposed of, for a period of 3 years.
